Dr. Julia Chen started vocal lessons with Megan Rutledge at the Royal Conservatory of Music while pursuing her first degree at the University of Toronto. Upon returning to Hong Kong, she furthered her training with Madam Ella Kiang and obtained ATCL, LTCL and FTCL from Trinity Guildhall and Trinity College London. In recent years, she also studies under Terence Goff who resides in New York.
Julia made her operatic role debut in 2009 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre. In 2014 she gave a solo charity concert at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall and raised a considerable amount for homeless children ministries. She was invited by All Saints Cathedral to give a solo recital, and sang in several concerts with the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pipe Band.
She performs regularly with the Ella Kiang Singers and the Diocesan Girls’ School(DGS) alumni choir, and has appeared as the soprano soloist in numerous concerts, including one in March 2023 that featured Beethoven’s Symphony 9 under the baton of Mr LEUNG Kin-fung, and those organised by the Hong Kong Chinese Oratorio Society, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals accompanied by the Hong Kong String Orchestra, Hong Kong Hymn Society, DGS Alumni Orchestra, Happy Music, Musica Viva, Hong Kong Opera Society, All Nations Chorale, and a multimedia event directed by Dr. MUI Kwong-chiu, etc. This November she will be giving her second charity concert in Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, this time to support the work of Orbis for children in Mongolia.
