Julia CHEN


Dr Julia Chen started vocal lessons with Megan Rutledge at the Royal Conservatory of Music while pursuing her first degree at the University of Toronto. Upon returning to Hong Kong, she furthered her training under the tutelage of Madam Ella Kiang and obtained ATCL, LTCL and FTCL from Trinity College London. In recent years, she also continues her vocal studies with Terence Goff from New York.

Julia made her operatic debut at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre in 2009. In 2014 and 2023 she gave two charity concerts at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, benefitting homeless children in mainland China and Orbis’ paediatric eyecare program in Mongolia respectively. Julia makes regular appearances with the Ella Kiang Singers and Diocesan Girls’ School alumni choir. Julia has also appeared as the soprano soloist with numerous music associations, such as the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pipe Band, the Chinese Oratorio Society, Hong Kong Hymn Society, Diocesan Girls’ School Alumni Orchestra, Happy Music, Musica Viva, Hong Kong Opera Society, All Nations Chorale; as well as in a multimedia concert directed by Dr Mui Kwong-Chiu, and a TWGH concert accompanied by the Hong Kong String Orchestra.

Her recent engagements in 2023-24 included performances in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mendelssohn’s St. Paul (with the Hong Kong Oratorio Society), and Mozart’s Requiem, under the baton of Mr Leung Kin Fung, Professor Chan Wing Wah, and Mr Alex Tam respectively. Besides singing Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle with the Hong Kong Oratorio Society in September 2025, Julia will also appear with the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra in two concerts this November.
